Hendricks Makes Successful 410 Non-Wing Sprint Car Debut

Inside Line Promotions – WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (Aug. 8, 2018) – Zane Hendricks made a successful non-wing sprint car debut at a pair of tracks last weekend, competing at Gas City I-69 Speedway in Indiana on Friday and at Ohio’s Waynesfield Raceway Park on Saturday.

“Overall, it was a good weekend,” he said. “The results weren’t the greatest, but I thought I did well for the first time and I feel I can do better with more seat time.”

Hendricks’ first night behind the wheel of a 410ci non-wing sprint car came during his debut at Gas City I-69 Speedway.

“It was the first time I had seen Gas City,” he said. “The track had a lot of moisture and the car was really fun to drive.”

Hendricks finished seventh in his heat race and then earned a transfer to the A Main with a third-place finish in the B Main. He rolled off 18th for the main event and finished 16th.

“I was happy with the way it went,” he said. “I was able to move forward and was close to being in the top 10 at one point when a car got under me and pushed me out of the way, forcing me to lose a lot of momentum and positions.

“I felt really comfortable in the car, which was great since it was my first time in a non-wing sprint car. The transition was a lot easier than the time I went from a midget to a winged 360 sprint car.”

Hendricks also showed speed the following night at Waynesfield Raceway Park. He qualified seventh quickest out of 34 drivers and fourth in his group. He finished third in his heat after starting on the pole.

“The track got slick in a hurry,” he said. “So that, along with double the horsepower I’m used to, took some getting used to. But I was able to qualify through my heat and didn’t have to run the B Main.”

Hendricks started seventh in the A Main.

“I mainly just held my position,” he said. “I started racing on the bottom and then moved to the top. If you ran the top, you had to be right on the cushion. I missed it by being a little too low one time and spun out. I also had a flat tire and had to go to the back, which is about where I finished.”

Hendricks was grateful to Goodnight Racing and Scott Benic for the opportunity to drive a sprint car.

“I’ve been working for Goodnight Racing and Scott Benic at the track for most of the summer,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed working on cars compared to driving them, which I didn’t expect. It’s pretty cool to be able to work for a team like theirs. Scott is incredibly smart when it comes to sprint cars. I’ve struggled a lot with driving a midget on a slick track this year. I think I learned a lot from Scott on Saturday night that will help me with my midget.

“I’d love to be able to do this again this year, but they’re really busy so I’m not sure that will happen. For next year, we might run a sprint car in Indiana.”

Hendricks is scheduled to return to midget racing on Aug. 18 at Macon Speedway in Macon, Ill., with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League.
